[Fitbit Air Ankle Verification] Same Body, but completely opposite judgments from Charge6 AI

📅 [Day 1 of Verification] Simultaneous Wearing: Air on Right Ankle × Charge6 on Left Ankle

Starting with this morning’s walk, I finally dove into the highly anticipated “ankle wearing data verification”!
Freed from that unexpectedly gross feeling of wearing two devices on my wrist, I set out in high spirits, but…

The moment I got back and checked the data on both devices, I was shocked 😮
Even though I wore them on the right and left legs of the same body while walking, the AI coaches of the two devices delivered completely different messages!

First, please take a look at their respective claims (or rather, confusing statements).

🤖 Air Coach on the Right Ankle: “You are a runner who just finished a tough, intense training session this morning!”

Ever since it was on my wrist, Mr. Air has had a track record of automatically misclassifying my “walking” workouts as “running.”
Now that it’s moved to the ankle, which directly absorbs the impact from the ground, that tendency seems to have become even more pronounced.

This morning’s running was a pretty tough load.
Great job on your 56-minute workout. Your pace was moderate, but your heart rate was much higher than your previous walks, marking the highest load this week. It seems your heart was working quite powerfully.

  • Heart Rate Changes: Around 15 minutes in, it spiked to 168 bpm. Did you feel any irregular palpitations or strong discomfort?
  • Impact on Body: You spent 46 minutes in the high-intensity zone, recording a load (76) that is more than double your previous ones. You might want to take it easy with your plans for the rest of today.
  • Signs of Recovery: Your heart rate remained high towards the end, so for now, sit down, take deep breaths, and wait to calm down.

Any changes in your current physical condition or blood pressure?

No, I’m just walking normally!!!😂

A runner with a pace of 15 min 35 sec/km?! 🤣
It arbitrarily turned me into a desperate runner pushing my limits, and even politely worried about my health, but its direction is completely off. I wasn’t even running in the first place! lol
Air says it was 168bpm 15 minutes in, but the Charge6 at the exact same time read 110bpm.
This difference is crazy! 😮

🟢 Charge6 Coach on the Left Ankle: “You are the ultimate energy-saving ninja who eliminated all waste this morning!”

On the other hand, Mr. Charge6, known for its stability on the wrist. As a result of moving to the ankle, it judged it as “the most energy-saving walk ever.”

Dorami-san, this morning’s walk was your most “energy-saving” one yet.
Great job. It was a solid walk of about an hour, but the burden on your heart was surprisingly light. Your body is completely used to this rhythm and is moving very efficiently ✨

  • High Cardiopulmonary Efficiency: Compared to a similar pace at the end of May, the load on your heart has decreased by nearly 80%. It was a very stable movement 💪
  • Strength at the End: For the last 5 minutes, you really pushed your heart rate up (max 163 bpm). Whether it was a steep hill or an intentional spurt, it shows clearly in the data.

How does your back and chest feel after the walk?

I never expected the load to drop by 80% and for it to switch to energy-saving mode just by measuring on the ankle instead of the wrist!

🏃‍♀️💨 The Truth Behind the 163bpm: I Just Wanted to Get Home Quickly!

The AI coach asked, “A steep hill or an intentional spurt?”, well, if I had to say, it was an intentional spurt! 🏃‍♂️
I realized halfway through that if my return was delayed by even 3 minutes, I’d bump into the neighborhood kids’ group walking to school, so I hurried up! lol
For a local like me where everywhere I look is someone I know, I wanted to get home before the adults from the neighborhood watch came out to the street corners! Having to smile and act friendly on the way home is tiring so early in the morning! 😂
It’s amazing that Charge6 properly figured out I was hurrying! lol

😤 The Problem of Automatic Misrecognition

In this experiment, the veteran Charge6 wrapped around my ankle said “Great job on the energy-saving walk!” while the newcomer Air said “Great job on the tough running!”.

The difference in step count during the walk between the two was only 31 steps, well within the margin of error!
Also, compared to the data from last week when I wore it on my right wrist, I don’t think there’s much difference in the step count.
In contrast, the average heart rate showed a pretty big gap: Air was 131bpm while Charge6 was 110bpm.
Above all, their opinions are completely split between “Walking” and “Running” for the workout judgment in the app!
I’m going to intentionally leave Air’s workout misrecognition uncorrected today. I’ll keep quiet and not report to the AI coach that it was a “false recognition” 😆
I want to test how it judges things tomorrow in this state!

This AI coach seems to be doing more work behind the scenes than I thought, so I’ll keep it a secret 😂
